2010 Events

2010 MEMBERSHIP DRIVE: Supporters are invited to become a Friend of the Roy Bailey African American History Center during the ongoing membership drive. For information, click here, or call the Center at 615-449-2911.

Feb. 13: Health & Wellness presentation: "How to Look Good, Feel Good and Be Good for the Remainder of Your Life," by Dr. Billy J. Taylor. Event will begin at noon at Cedars of Lebanon Primitive Baptist Church. Free and open to the public.

FEB. 18: Wilson County citizens who were active in the Civil Rights movement talk about their experiences in a special presentation. Noon, Roy Bailey African American History Museum, 115 East Main Street.

FEB. 23: Rosenwald Schools. A look at the history of the schools built in the early 20th Century by and for African Americas, funded by Sears, Roebuck and Company president Julius Rosenwald. Noon, Roy Bailey African American History Museum, 115 East Main Street. 

FEB. 27: Black History Luncheon & Fashion Show, co-sponsored by Judy's Fashion Boutique. Fashion show, lunch and silent auction will be held at Pickett Rucker United Methodist Church, 633 Glover Street in Lebanon. Tickets ($10 in advance, $12 at the door) will be on sale Jan. 30 at Judy's Fashion Boutique II, 224 West Main Street (615-444-5433); the Chamber of Commerce, 149 Public Square (615-444-5503); and the Roy Bailey Museum, 115 East Main Street, Suite B (615-449-2911).

JUNE 11: Fundraising Banquet, with featured speaker, Tennessee Historic Preservation Officer Patrick McIntyre, director of the Tennessee Historical Commission. 6 p.m., Ward Agricultural Center's East-West Building. Tickets are $25. For ticket information, e-mail info@wilsoncountyblackhistory.org.

SATURDAYS AT THE MUSEUM: The Committee frequently sponsors special presentations focusing on Wilson County history on Saturdays at noon at the Roy Bailey African American History Center, 115 East Main Street, Lebanon, Tenn. 2010 Schedule to be announced.

WILSON COUNTY BLACK HISTORY COMMITTEE meetings are scheduled every third Saturday, 2 p.m.

2009 Events

The Wilson County Black History Committee plans regular activities and events each year to connect with the community.

 

April 9: A pre-Mother's Day Hat Show and Silent Auction. Noon. Location to be announced.

 

April 19: Community Unity Day Celebration, 3 p.m., Pickett Rucker United Methodist Church, 633 Glover Street, Lebanon, Tenn.

 

April 26: A tribute to the original Lebanon Clowns Negro Baseball Team, with guest speaker Chris Price. 3 p.m. Pickett Rucker United Methodist Church, 633 Glover Street, Lebanon, Tenn.

 

June 12: Fundraising banquet: "Rebuilding (Wilson County) Heritage," 6 p.m., East/West Building at Ward Agricultural Center, 945 E. Baddour Pkwy., Lebanon, Tenn. Speaker is Tenn. Senator Thelma M. Harper. $20, with proceeds used toward the restoration of historic Pickett Chapel. For tickets, call 449-2911 or e-mail info@wilsoncountyblackhistory.org.

 

JULY 18: Music fest celebrating roots music, 1 – 4 p.m., Garden of Prayer Tabernacle, 1015 Bluebird Road, Lebanon. Donations accepted. For information: call 615-444-9899. Sponsored by the Wilson County Black History Committee and WANT-FM Gospel Show hosts John R. and Ms. Dean.

 

NOVEMBER 7: Seventy-Plus luncheon honoring community seniors age 70 and older. Pickett-Rucker United Methodist Church, 633 Glover Street, Lebanon. Luncheon begins at noon. Submit names to info@wilsoncountyblackhistory.org.

 

DECEMBER 13: Pre-Kwanzaa celebration featuring guest speaker State Rep. Brenda Gilmore. Food and entertainment. Pickett-Rucker United Methodist Church, 633 Glover Street, Lebanon. Begins at 3 p.m.

 

THIRD SATURDAY PRESENTATIONS: The Committee sponsors a monthly special presentation every third Saturday at noon at the Roy Bailey African American History Center, 115 East Main Street, Lebanon, Tenn.

     June 20: Rosenwald Schools, presented by Georgia Crutcher

     July 18: Linda Grandstaff, director of Wilson County Archives.
